Busy Year Ahead in 2014

Posted by on Mar 27, 2014 in Personal Projects, Whats Happening at Makeaholic | 0 comments

Well What can I say lots of thing are happening and how life changes in just one conversation with someone. Since my last post telling you about my de-stashing of my craft boxes I now have two horses, this is Scrummy who I have had for 10 years (that’s scary)

and this is Bunjie who I have taken on loan for a year

Hopeing to compete both throughout the year at local dressage shows

Stevie and I have a new dog called maisie who we have rehomed from Borders Animal Welfare Centre in Earlston. She is starting to come out of her shell now but is nervous of other dogs, horses and some men, I am sure with time she will get her confidence back, she certainly enjoyed her trip to the beach at the weekend,

After a conversation with a local business man who was trying to find someone to create some products from old items that would only be thrown away, I offered to help, so we are currently creating a range of products.  More will be revealed when they are launched shortly.  I love working on something different really gets my creative brain active and we have come up with some items you would never have thought of.

I have launched a new facebook page called Border Browbands as I am now creating beaded, Shamballa and ribbon browbands and accressories. New website being created for this as well

I am still creating new gifts to feature on my Makeaholic Facebook page and website, we have some stalls booked for the year ahead and am waiting to hear about some more we have applied for. Please keep up to date with where we will be on our facebook page

I am also still training for the Beat the Borders challenge in my spare time! We are getting on well and I am feeling fitter which is great, needing to get out more on the bike but hopefully with the lighter nights we will be peddling our way round the roads.

So as you can see a busy year ahead, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Happy Making

6 Weeks in….

Posted by on Feb 19, 2014 in Beat the Borders Challenge 2014 | 0 comments

6 weeks into my training for beat the borders and well, I am glad I started training early as I have already had to have a 10 day break to let my sciatica settle down, after being out on the bike I think I must have got cold and well….. hope-a-long was my name for a while!

Training so far I have been walking the bridges in Kelso which is roughly miles. I then added an extra mile on by going up round by the ambulance station, once it is lighter I can head up round by the racecourse to add more miles onto the route and hopefully get out and walk the hills around the borders as well. I have also been running part of the bridges route although I have to be careful due to hips etc.

I have been cycling up to the horse on my days off which is just over 5 miles away, meaning it is about 11 miles. Its all up hill on the way there taking about 40-45 mins and all down hill on the way back taking about 20 mins! I can only cycle on my days off but as the days get lighter I can get some new routes adding more interest to my training.

Bring on the lighter nights!

Whats happening at Makeaholic February 2014

Posted by on Feb 5, 2014 in Events, Whats Happening at Makeaholic | 0 comments

Well after a quiet January trying to get caught up and organised for the year ahead we are now in to February.

Having had a bit of a clear out in January we started the month with a craft de-stash event at Smailholm village hall on the 2nd of February, where we me lots of other crafters with lots of goodies they were selling, it was difficult to resist buying more craft goodies. I have to admit I didn’t manage but everything I bought will be put to good use very soon. There was some very talented crafters selling off their surplus craft supplies from card making and jewellery to knitting and ceramic paints, the choice was endless.

Karen the organiser of the de stash did a fantastic job and it was so friendly and everyone had a good time. I don’t think there was many people customer or stall holders that could resist  the delicious baking from The Dessert Diva.  Karen is now organising more craft events for us to see our handmade products, too keep up to date with this keep an eye on the Smailholm Village Craft Market facebook page. We hope to be attending some of these through out the year, Keep an eye on our Facebook page, blog and website to see all our fairs this year.

Well now we are into February and we have got organised well as organised as we get! I will be continuing my clear out and be posting a sale album on the Makeaholic Facebook page, with some of our products and maybe some of the surplus supplies that didn’t sell at the craft fair as well.

New products for this year are well under way, keep an eye on here for posts about whats new. We also have some craft supplies and kits being added to the website shortly. Lots to look forward to.

Happy Making

Beat the Borders Challenge 2014

Posted by on Jan 18, 2014 in Beat the Borders Challenge 2014, Personal Projects | 0 comments

Well as mentioned in my what’s the plan for 2014? blog post I have signed up for Beat the Borders

What is Beat the Borders?

Well a lot of training as the challenge is to complete a route around the Scottish borders. 40 miles by bike and 18 miles on foot. Starting and finishing in Melrose.

The route includes leaving Melrose on the bikes, head up scots view, head down to Makerstoun and then onto Kelso. Leaving kelso over the old bridge and turning right on the the Maxton road, then left on to the Roxburgh road. Cross the A68 on to the Ancrum road, through Ancrum and onto Woll where you leave the bike and head off across the countryside back to Melrose.

This is the Gold route, which I am aiming for. There is a bronze and silver finish. Bronze is a 40 mile route finishing at Woll, the silver route is 48 miles long finishing near Selkirk.

Why do the challenge?

This challenge is being run to raise money for CHAS (Children’s Hospice Association for Scotland) definitely a worthy cause and having met some of the volunteers for the charity last year while helping to photograph the event with Stevie Purves Photography I was inspired to challenge myself to complete the course for myself and to help the charity.

This is definitely  challenge for me especially as I have a few old injuries mostly from working with horses (I still say you are safer on board as most of my injuries were from handling) injuries include hips, ankle, wrists and a collar bone to name a few. So I will have to be careful to build up slowly while training.

So let the training begin, walking and biking as often as I can, keep popping back to see how the training is going!

Whats the plan for 2014?

Posted by on Jan 9, 2014 in Where It All Started | 0 comments

Lots of exciting things planned for 2014, personally and for Makeaholic. Too many to fit into a blog post :P but here goes:

Lots of new makes planned for this year. Some are in the design stage and some are still in my head but my first new years resolution is to finish making what I started, one of these is a personal project you will see below that has been on the go for 18 months! We have done 3 house moves in this time so it has not been regularely worked on. I am planning  january clear out so who knows what I will find in my craft boxes, or if there will be a sale album appearing on facebook etc. We will have to wait and see.

I am planning on learning glass etching and crochet but before I get started on any new projects, as mentioned above I have set myself the task of finishing all the projects I have started which include turning the picture below taken by Stevie Purves Photography (my Fiance) 3 years ago into a Cross stitch.

My personal challenge this year is to participate in Beat the Borders challenge which is a 40 mile bike ride and a 18 mile hill walk round the beautiful scottish borders countryside where I live, this is to take place at the end of August and is to raise money for CHAS charity. I met lots of the CHAS team last year and they work so hard for such a fantiastic charity. Lots of training to do, but looking forward to it all!

Am really looking forward to 2014. Wishing everyone a Happy, healthy and productive 2014

Happy making!
